Bushman Fuller (Of Holyoke)

Bushman Fuller (Of Holyoke)

Bushman Fuller (FINDAGRAVE) was an Afro-American that bought his own freedom from his master. He also bought the freedom of a woman named Flora Perry and then married her. He is buried in the southeast corner of the cemetery. The stone for his daughter-in-law is still here but his other family members have lost their stones to erosion. He most likely was buried off to the side of this cemetery due to his race.

Bushman Fuller lived at 540 Homestead Avenue. The house is from about 1771.

Gate at the Calvary Cemetery in Holyoke

Gate at the Calvary Cemetery in Holyoke

The parents of one of the priests of Sacred Heart Church are honored at the gate of his cemetery. William Foley in 1882 and Hanora Foley in 1904 were buried in Saint Thomas Cemetery in West Springfield. Their son paid for this gate as a memorial to them.

The exquisite statue gravestone of JJ McCarthy and his wife Catherine is near the gate. When Catherine died the amount of flowers sent to the home filled every room and the porch outside. When JJ died the obituary carefully stated to not send any flowers.

The building to the south is a chapel for the cemetery. On December 14 of 1944 it started as a chapel on the Sacred Heart for the first time. During November it has been blessed in front of a congregation from the church.

Across the way is the large gravestone for the Delaney family. James Delaney was a stone mason in Holyoke for many decades. He started his own business. He built many structures including the large dam for the Whiting Street Reservoir.

Potters Field in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Chicopee

Potters Field in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Chicopee

In the oldest section of the cemetery, there are burials from the 1830s.

This old section also has a large, empty-looking northern edge. This might be a potter’s field section. Thus these are pauper’s graves. In the town burial records, this section is denoted with a burial of Town Cemetery. In the 1840s to 1860s town burial records, the burials here are called either Cabotville, Maple Grove, or Town Cemetery.
