William Davitt
William Davitt was a chaplain in the American military in World War One. He died on the last day of the battle – November 11, 1918. His memorial is on the front of the stone but check out the back of the stone since his family is buried here.
Priests’ Circle at the Calvary Cemetery of Holyoke
This cemetery was started in 1882 by the Sacred Heart Church having been consecrated on March 20 of that year. The cemetery was laid out by the architect Ashley Tower.
Three churches in Holyoke are served by this cemetery. Read on this web page about the history of each of those churches. The churches are Sacred Heart Church, Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church, and Blessed Sacrament Church. Four priest are buried in this circle. In the back is Michael Howard who was the first priest of Rosary Church. He was at first buried in the churchyard of the Rosary Church. In 1974 when the church and campus was taken down, he was disinterred and reinterred at this location.

John Chase the Canal Builder
John Chase was the agent in charge of the Cabotville Canal including getting the canal, dam, housing, and mills built. He was also the agent in charge of the Holyoke Canal System including getting the canal, dam, housing, and mills built. His large obelisk is still in place and in great shape but his small tombstone is fallen. FINDAGRAVE
Potters Field in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Chicopee
In the oldest section of the cemetery, there are burials from the 1830s.
This old section also has a large, empty-looking northern edge. This might be a potter’s field section. Thus these are pauper’s graves. In the town burial records, this section is denoted with a burial of Town Cemetery. In the 1840s to 1860s town burial records, the burials here are called either Cabotville, Maple Grove, or Town Cemetery.
Chicopee Manufacturing Company Boarding House is at 25 Grove Street. It is from 1830 and was made by John Chase and Charles McClallan.
Edward Bellamy
Edward Bellamy (1850 to 1898) – FINDAGRAVE – wrote Looking Backwards in 1888. He also wrote Equality in 1897. Lastly there was a booklet called The Religion of Solidarity.
