Abbey Reservoir

Abbey Reservoir built in 1877 was located alongside the Calvary Cemetery in Chicopee. It would draw its water from the watershed of the Atwater neighborhood in Springfield. Chicopee would own this land but sell it to Springfield. In February of 1900 the smaller of the two dams at site was carried away in a flood but it was rebuilt by the spring. In August of the same year, the water level was so low that the pump station had to be opened. 404 million gallons of water was pumped that year. There were two dams and hence two reservoirs. Abbey Reservoir was finally condemned in 1923.
