Chemical Paper Mill

The Chemical Paper Mill is a Newton family company. It was started in January 1880 along the Third Level Canal. It was also run by the Ramage family. They made animal sized writing paper. Other products are papeteries, bond and envelope papers, index bristols, and linen finished papers. Also white patent coated folding box boards, press and colored lined folding boards, white blanks, board specialties, and buff and white silk wrapping. Look at that product name: Superfine Manillas Tag and Box Papers.

It had 16 mill powers running 6 machines. 12 1200 pound and 2 1400 pound 11 800 pound and 13 1000 pound. Also 5 Jordan engines.

Germania

The Germania was built by two brothers from Germany in 1865. Their names were  August and Hermann Stursberg.  Their mill number 2 is still around but the mill 1 is gone. They made wool products. These included chinchillas – overcoatings – kerseys – suitings – cloakings – worsteds – broadcloth – worsted yarns.

Connecticut River Paper Mill

Henry Dickinson started the Connecticut River Paper Mill in 1870 on the Third Level Canal. They are a maker of fine paper with one type being No. 1 High Grade. They were called the Connecticut River Paper Company from the 1870s to the 1890s.

1890

The Purcell Envelope Company which formed in 1894 is a maker of United States stamped envelopes. They in 1896 joined with the Connecticut River Paper Mill.

They are called the Bemis in 1870.

Then they were the Union Paper Mill.

Then a part of Riverside.

Lastly, the United Folding Box Mill.

Dickinson Paper Mill

The Dickinson Paper Mill was built in 1882 between the first and second canals. George Dickinson was the owner. The architect was David and Ashley Tower. Note the tower facing the canal. Henry the son of George took over later in life.
